Job Description

A new role of Executive Director has been created to support and further the 5- year+ vision, mission, values and strategies of Kílala Lelum (KL). This newly appointed ED will work collaboratively with the circle of Elders and team leads (including: physician lead, nursing co-leads, administrative lead, Dudes Club lead and Indigenous health lead) to provide leadership for the planning, coordination, integration, operation, evaluation, funding and expansion of Indigenous Health programs policies and services.

The ED will further facilitate an organizational structure that promotes cultural- safety and humility within all programs, teams and relationships within our organization. The ED will report to the KL Board of Directors.

The ED will work collaboratively and in partnership with our many public and private sector partners, including: UBC, Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, First Nations Health Authority and the First Nations and Aboriginal Primary Care Network. The ED will develop and maintain respectful relationships with relevant community stakeholders and organizations including local Indigenous health & social services organizations and local Indigenous communities.

The ED will collaborate with an interprofessional care team to develop and implement Indigenous Health Services for community members residing in Vancouver’s Strathcona neighbourhood. This team aims to provide culturally-safe, trauma and violence-informed and effective primary care for people of all Nations that is strength-based, and both inclusionary and flexible for all individuals, including those with mental health issues, substance use issues, or concurrent conditions. Our goal is to meet the holistic needs of members (patients), their families, and to provide access to services and integration across the care continuum.

As an Executive Director working in an environment dedicated to the health and wellness of Indigenous people, the ED will support the work of an inter- professional community health team.

The ED must embrace the Kílala Lelum model of care and commit to a style of leadership that upholds the core values of our organization, which includes: the promotion of equity & wellness, respect, lateral kindness, and the respectful partnering of Indigenous knowledge with western-medical knowledge.

The ED will work with the Indigenous Health team (Elders, Knowledge-Keepers, Cultural Programs Coordinator and Elder’s Assistants) to facilitate the inclusion of Indigenous health & wellness practices and approaches within the primary care setting by all staff.

Key areas of responsibility include:


The ED will hold a master’s degree in public health, or a master’s of business administration, or an equivalent set of life and professional experiences. Candidates with 5+ years in management or leadership roles will be preferred. Experience and passion for working with Indigenous people and communities is essential.

The ED must have:

Preference will be given to candidates with Indigenous ancestry and to those with significant lived experience working with Indigenous people.

The ED must commit to developing knowledge and relationships which will support the facilitation of members’ (patients’) access to Indigenous healing modalities; knowledge of the social, political and historical impacts of colonization on the health and well-being of Indigenous Peoples; knowledge of legislation and government policies and procedures that impact Indigenous Peoples’ health.

The ED must have the skills to work and lead an environment that upholds cultural- safety and respectful relationships. The ED must also be able to work effectively within a team environment; communicate effectively, using non-violent communication skills with Elders, co-workers, Indigenous patients and their families.
